COVID-19 Vaccine Knowledge, Practice, and Attitudes Among Hemodialysis Patients in Egypt, Kenya, and Cameroon: A Multicenter Study.

Patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) are at increased risk of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and were prioritized for vaccination, yet vaccine hesitancy remains common. We assessed COVID-19 vaccine knowledge, acceptance, and attitudes among patients receiving HD in Egypt, Kenya, and Cameroon and identified factors associated with vaccine acceptance, prior infection, willingness to receive future doses, and postvaccination complications. Multicenter cross-sectional survey study. Between March 2021 and April 2022, 765 patients receiving maintenance HD and 196 non-dialysis controls were recruited from dialysis centers in Egypt, Kenya, and Cameroon. Sociodemographic characteristics, clinical comorbidities, prior COVID-19, sources of vaccine information, and exposure to vaccinated or infected relatives. COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, willingness to receive future doses, prior infection, and post-vaccination complications. Structured questionnaires assessed knowledge, practices, and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination. Multivariable logistic regression identified factors independently associated with study outcomes. Vaccine acceptance was lower among patients receiving HD than nondialysis controls (58.2% vs 96.2%). Fear of side effects was the most common reason for refusal (39.3%). Postvaccination complications were less frequent among patients receiving HD (22.3% vs 44.3%). Hesitancy was more common among women, younger participants, and those with comorbidities or no prior COVID-19. Having vaccinated or previously infected relatives was associated with a greater willingness to receive future doses. Cross-sectional design limits causal inference. Nonprobability sampling and unmatched controls may limit generalizability. COVID-19 cases may have been underreported because of limited testing. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among patients receiving HD is driven by fear, misinformation, and sociodemographic factors. Targeted education and improved access to reliable vaccine information may help increase uptake in this population.

COVID-19 Vaccination and Risk of Post-COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease: A Population-Based Cohort and Target Trial Emulation Study.

Whether COVID-19 vaccination is associated with lower long-term cardiovascular risk after SARS-CoV-2 infection and how much infection prevention mediates this association remain unclear. To evaluate associations of vaccination, including its timing relative to SARS-CoV-2 infection, with post-COVID-19 cardiovascular disease (CVD), and quantify the contribution of infection prevention. This statewide population-based cohort study used linked administrative health data for 2,391,456 adults in Victoria, Australia (2019-2025). Associations of pre- or post-infection vaccination with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE; primary outcome), stroke, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), acute coronary syndrome (ACS), atrial fibrillation (AF), and venous thromboembolism (VTE) were evaluated using time-varying Cox proportional hazards regression, causal mediation analysis, and target trial emulation. Vaccination was associated with lower hazards of MACE and all secondary outcomes. Estimated absolute risk reductions for MACE were 0.21% with pre-infection vaccination and 0.24% with post-infection vaccination. Three or more vaccine doses were associated with progressively lower hazards across cardiovascular outcomes. Mediation analysis suggested that approximately 68% of the estimated association between vaccination and lower post-COVID cardiovascular risk was not explained by prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Vaccination before or after SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with lower hazards of post-COVID-19 cardiovascular outcomes, with stronger observed associations at higher dose numbers. Most of the estimated association was not explained by infection prevention alone. These findings support COVID-19 vaccination as an important component of strategies to reduce the burden of post-COVID-19 CVD while highlighting the need for further studies to clarify the mechanisms underlying these associations.

Modeling infodemics on a global scale: A 30 countries study using epidemiological and social listening data.

Infodemics represent a significant threat to public health, arising from complex interactions between online and offline phenomena. The continuous feedback loops between digital information ecosystems and real-world contingencies make infodemics particularly challenging to define operationally, measure, and eventually model in quantitative terms. This study aims to evaluate the effect of various epidemic-related variables on the dynamics of the COVID-19 infodemic, using a regression modeling framework applied to data from 30 countries across diverse income groups. We use World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 surveillance data on new cases and deaths, vaccination data from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, infodemic data (volume of public conversations and social media content) from the WHO EARS platform, and Google Trends data to represent information demand. Our findings show that new deaths are the strongest predictor of document production, and that the epidemic burden in neighboring countries exerts a greater influence on document production than domestic epidemic conditions. Building on these results, we propose a data-driven classification of country-level response that highlights country-specific discrepancies between the evolution of the infodemic and the epidemic. Further, an analysis of the temporal evolution of the relationship between the two phenomena quantifies the extent to which discussions surrounding vaccine rollouts may have shaped the development of the infodemic. Beyond underscoring the value of a holistic approach that integrates both online and offline dimensions, our results demonstrate that the evolution of infodemics and their relationship with epidemic variables can be closely monitored, even over short time windows.

Viral respiratory infections and their co-occurrence among patients hospitalized in Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital, Babol, 2021-2024.

Vaccination has reduced the viral respiratory diseases in the community, but it has not ended. This study was conducted to determine the distribution of COVID-19, the influenza virus, and the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This retrospective, descriptive-analytical study was conducted based on patient file information in Babol City (2021-2024). Clinical examination of the patient, computed tomography (CT), and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to identify the viruses in 10,567 patients. Mean, standard deviation (SD), distribution (%), and logistic regression were used to analyze the data using SPSS-23 (p<0.05). 83.34% and 16.65% of patients suffered from COVID-19 (12.95% ≥ 50 years old) and influenza (15.42%, ≤ 50 years old), respectively. The most underlying diseases were related to cardiovascular disease (17.47%). Female patients suspected of COVID-19 (females; 14.14% versus (vs) males; 11.87%) and influenza (females; 14.90% vs males; 15.62%) were more than male patients. COVID-19 (12.91%) and influenza (15.27%) in 2022 and 2023 showed a high distribution, respectively. Co-occurrence of COVID-19 and influenza was observed in one female. Gender, season, and year (each with a P-value of P=0.00) was associated in this descriptive analysis with the distribution of COVID-19. A significant relationship between season and year with the distribution of influenza was observed. A high distribution of COVID-19 was diagnosed among patients. Gender and year of study had a significant effect on COVID-19. Diagnosis and differentiation of the viral agent by molecular methods should be performed in a patient.

Experiences of Nursing Students Regarding Online Teaching and Learning During COVID-19 Pandemic.

Lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic compelled universities to implement online teaching and learning methods to comply with social distancing measures. The University of Botswana transitioned from classroom face-to-face teaching to remote learning in response to the pandemic. This study aimed to explore the experiences of nursing students at the University of Botswana with online teaching and learning during the COVID-19 outbreak. The results of the study have the potential to inform policies on how nursing education could respond to future pandemics and ensure continuity of learning. The study utilised an explorative descriptive qualitative design to explore the students' experiences using online teaching and learning activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sixteen (16) students consented to participate in the study. Data were collected from September to November 2023 using a semistructured interview guide and analysed using content analysis. Trustworthiness was accomplished through credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability. Further, the study used COREQ to ensure quality. Five main themes and 14 subthemes were identified. The main themes are opportunities for online teaching and learning, students' performances during the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges of online teaching and learning, the need to improve online teaching and learning, and nursing as a profession and online learning. The study offered insights into how the COVID-19 pandemic affected nursing students' teaching and learning. Further research is recommended to guide nursing education and online learning policy.

National survey of patients with neuromuscular disease and COVID-19 in Japan.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses particular risks for patients with neuromuscular disorders, but its severity and outcomes in this population remain unclear. We investigated the clinical features, transmission routes, treatments, and prognostic factors of COVID-19 in patients with neuromuscular disorders in Japan. A retrospective questionnaire survey was submitted to 13 neuromuscular disease centers to identify patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between December 2019 and October 2022. The collected data comprised demographics, underlying diseases, living situation, activities of daily living (ADLs), vaccination status, respiratory and cardiac management, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. We evaluated whether pre-illness respiratory status, cardiac function, vaccination history, and age could be risk factors associated with prognosis after COVID-19 infection. In total, 155 patients were identified. Duchenne muscular dystrophy was the most frequent neuromuscular disease (35%), followed by myotonic dystrophy (14%). The mean patient age was 30.7 years, and 70% of patients lived at home with family. Meanwhile, 54% of patients were wheelchair users, and 8% were bedridden. The vaccination rate was 56%. Fever was the most common symptom, and 5% of patients were asymptomatic. Antipyretics were the most frequent treatments; adults mainly received antivirals. Overall, 87% recovered fully, but two patients died. Of the examined factors, only higher age at onset was predictive of worse prognosis (p = 0.0019). COVID-19 symptoms and transmission routes in patients with neuromuscular disease resembled those in the general population. Advanced age was associated with poorer outcomes, underscoring the need for careful monitoring in these subgroups.
