Difunctionalization of unsaturated hydrocarbons via EDA complexes to access pentafluorosulfanyl thioethers.

Zhang Xiaofeng X, Jiang Yuanyang Y, Yang Hui-Yi HY, Ma Yifan Y et al.

Recently, the pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) group has attracted considerable interest from medicinal chemists owing to its capacity to significantly enhance the pharmaceutical properties of small-molecule drug candidates. However, a general method for three-component pentafluorosulfanylation of electron-deficient alkenes remains elusive. Herein, we present an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex photoactivation strategy for the thiopentafluorosulfanylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, including electron-deficient alkenes, alkynes, 1,6-enynes, and even acetylene gas. The utility of this approach is demonstrated through the synthesis of a diverse array of pentafluorosulfanyl thioethers and the late-stage functionalization of complex molecules, including pharmaceuticals, natural products, and amino acid derivatives. This work establishes a framework for designing atom-economical difunctionalization reactions that employ green LEDs under mild conditions. Moreover, mechanistic studies support an EDA complex-mediated pathway and identify ArSCl as a key intermediate formed upon generation of the thiyl radical.

Computational modelling of host-guest interactions between a Ni(II) coordination complex and persistent organic pollutants.

Hasan Md Nur MN, Dutta Basudeb B, Mahapatra Manas M, Halder Shibashis S

Regulatory restrictions and controlled experimental access to numerous hazardous agrochemicals pose a growing challenge to the strategic design of advanced sensing materials for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a well-characterized Ni(II)-based coordination complex, prepared by a slow diffusion process, as a possible sensing platform for the identification of several POPs. Density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, reduced density gradient, and electron localization function analyses were utilized to systematically investigate the Ni complex's interaction with representative POPs, their optical responses, non-covalent interactions, and electron localization. Depending on the molecular structure of the POPs, optimized host-guest geometries exhibit favourable binding affinities driven by a combination of van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, π-interactions, etc. The recognition mechanism and relative selectivity of the Ni(II) complex towards different POPs can be observed at the molecular level through binding energies, charge transfer characteristics, frontier molecular orbital analyses, independent gradient model and non-covalent interaction studies. The outcome highlights the Ni(II) complex's potential as a sensing material via alterations in optical responses. Its electronic structure is found to be sensitively modulated upon guest binding. This study establishes a predictive computational sensing strategy for hazardous POPs that are difficult to access experimentally (sometimes banned), providing useful guidelines for the future design of coordination complex-based sensors targeting hazardous and highly regulated contaminants.

Characterization of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-phosphorylated hemoglobin for changing pork meat quality: from simulations to applications.

Wang Yanli Y, Liu Lili L, Cheng Weiwei W, Zhang Xinshuai X et al.

The valorization of hemoglobin (Hb) from meat processing by-products is essential for sustainable recycling. However, this process is severely constrained by the inherent limitations of Hb, such as poor stability and low solubility. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a computationally guided dual-modification strategy. This approach integrates covalent phosphorylation with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-mediated non-covalent interactions to enhance the applicability of modified Hb. Artificial neural network prediction and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to rationalize the modification process. MD simulations and binding energy calculations revealed that the stability of the complex is driven by specific amino acid residues, with ALA142, ASN139 and THR38 making the most significant contributions through robust hydrogen bonding networks. Spectroscopic analysis confirmed that this interaction with EGCG drastically reduced the α-helix content (from 74% to 30%), inducing a conformational opening that exposed cryptic hydrophobic pockets. The modified Hb exhibited superior surface hydrophobicity, antioxidant activity and foaming capacity. Crucially, application in a pork meat sausage model demonstrated that the EGCG-phosphorylated porcine hemoglobin (EGCG-PHb) complex effectively acted, overcoming the severe gel brittleness caused by phosphorylation and significantly enhancing the springiness and chewiness of the meat matrix. The protein structure of the EGCG-PHb complex was significantly altered compared to Hb, and EGCG-PHb complex also significantly improved the springiness and chewiness of pork sausages. This dual-modification strategy provides new insights into the development and utilization of Hb. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

An all-in-one analytical platform for rapid determination of toxic dyes in complex water by SERS and machine learning.

Gao Jie J, Yu Qian Q, Guan Zhiwen Z, Zhang Weiwei W et al.

Rapid and reliable determination of toxic dyes in complex aqueous environments remains challenging because matrix interference and complicated sample pretreatment often compromise analytical accuracy and practical applicability. Therefore, an integrated filtration-adsorption-SERS sensing platform coupled with one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) modeling was fabricated for rapid and quantitative detection of malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB) in complex water samples. Polypropylene filter cloth (PPFC) served as a porous fibrous support for sample filtration, while Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were uniformly immobilized on the fiber surfaces via a seed-mediated in situ growth strategy to provide SERS-active sites. Activated carbon was incorporated into the PPFC/Ag filter configuration to provide adsorption of the target dyes during sample treatment. The resulting configuration integrates filtration, adsorption, and SERS detection within a common analytical workflow, while 1D-CNN modeling was employed for quantitative analysis of the acquired SERS spectra. Benefiting from the integrated filtration-adsorption configuration and porous fibrous architecture, the platform exhibited high signal uniformity and favorable analytical performance, with detection limits of 10-9 M for both MG and MB. Adsorption kinetic analysis demonstrated that dye removal followed the pseudo-second-order model, with equilibrium removal efficiencies of 99.7% for MB and 98.6% for MG. To improve quantitative reliability in complex matrices, a 1D-CNN model was employed for SERS spectral analysis, yielding high accuracy with R2 values of 0.992 and 0.982 for MB and MG, respectively, with low prediction errors. Furthermore, spiked Moyan Lake water samples showed recoveries of 98.14% and 96.37% for MB and MG, respectively, with RSD values of 4.53% and 4.91%, demonstrating satisfactory accuracy and precision in a real water matrix. By integrating these complementary functions within the same filtration configuration, the proposed platform establishes a continuous analytical workflow from sample filtration and adsorption to SERS detection and quantitative analysis. This integrated design simplifies the conventional multi-step procedure and provides a sensitive, reliable, and practical approach for rapid monitoring of trace organic dyes in complex water matrices.
