BD Appoints Former Masimo Executive to Lead New Connected Care Segment

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has named Bilal Muhsin as president of its newly created connected care segment, effective July 2. This appointment marks a significant step in BD's ongoing restructuring efforts announced earlier this year.
Strategic Restructuring and New Leadership
BD's connected care segment, part of the company's February restructuring plan, will oversee medication management and advanced patient monitoring devices. This includes the Pyxis line of automated dispensing systems and Alaris infusion pumps.
Muhsin, who previously served as chief operating officer at Masimo, brings 25 years of experience in connected care technologies, software, and informatics strategies. In his new role, he will report directly to BD CEO Tom Polen and lead strategy development to support the transition to the revised business structure over the coming months.
Polen expressed confidence in Muhsin's appointment, stating, "Bilal's extensive and deep knowledge of connected care technologies, software and informatics strategies will help BD as it advances its connected care strategy."
Connected Care Portfolio Expansion
BD has been actively growing its connected care business through strategic acquisitions. Notable deals include:
- The $1.53 billion buyout of Parata Systems
- A $93 million acquisition of Medkeeper
These acquisitions have bolstered BD's pharmacy robotics business, complementing the Pyxis franchise added through the $12.2 billion takeover of Carefusion in 2015.
Challenges and Opportunities
The connected care segment faces both challenges and opportunities. The Pyxis business received a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration last year, highlighting regulatory hurdles. However, BD has recently begun shipping a new Pyxis device, which Polen believes could lead to market share shifts and opportunities for premium pricing.
As the pharmaceutical industry continues to evolve, BD's focus on connected care technologies under Muhsin's leadership signals a strategic push towards more integrated and efficient healthcare solutions.
