Abridge, a leading generative AI company specializing in medical documentation, has secured a substantial $300 million in Series E funding. This investment, led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and joined by Khosla Ventures, catapults the company's valuation to an estimated $5.3 billion. The funding round comes just four months after Abridge's $250 million Series D, underscoring the rapid growth and increasing demand for AI-powered solutions in healthcare.

Expansion of Abridge's Technology and Market Presence

Abridge's AI technology, which converts patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, has seen significant adoption across the healthcare industry. The company reports that its solutions are now deployed in over 150 health systems, marking a 50% increase from just four months ago. This expansion encompasses a wide range of healthcare providers, from academic institutions to federally qualified health centers, supporting patient-doctor conversations across 55 specialties and 28 languages.

The company projects that it will support more than 50 million medical conversations this year, highlighting the scale of its impact on healthcare documentation. Shiv Rao, M.D., Abridge's CEO and a practicing cardiologist, emphasized the company's mission to "go millions of miles deep on all the different ways that we can help unburden clinicians from clerical work."

Abridge has recently unveiled new capabilities that extend its generative AI tools beyond outpatient and emergency medicine to support inpatient care. This expansion integrates seamlessly with existing Epic workflows, opening up new avenues for innovation in more complex healthcare settings. Additionally, the company has introduced a gen-AI-powered feature to streamline the outpatient orders workflow, currently in an early pilot phase through Epic's Workshop program.

The company's focus on revenue cycle intelligence is particularly noteworthy, with Rao stating, "We are, in essence, a mid-revenue cycle company, because the notes that we generate essentially function as bills for insurance companies."

Johns Hopkins Medicine is implementing the ambient AI platform across its network of 6,700 clinicians, six hospitals, and 40 patient-care centers. Mayo Clinic is expanding the use of Abridge's AI platform enterprise-wide, starting with approximately 2,000 clinicians. Deaconess Health System is also broadening the use of the ambient AI technology across its 19-hospital network following a successful pilot.

Abridge has also formed strategic partnerships to enhance its offerings. A collaboration with Wolters Kluwer Health integrates UpToDate into Abridge's AI-based medical note-taking tool, while a partnership with Epic and Mayo Clinic focuses on developing a gen AI ambient documentation workflow for nurses.
