Thornal, who most recently served as president and CEO of Nevro, a spinal cord stimulation company, brings a wealth of experience in the medical device industry to his new role at Zimmer Biomet. In this position, he will oversee the Americas commercial organization and lead business strategy and execution for several key global units, including knees, hips, S.E.T. (Sports Medicine, Extremities, and Trauma), and data, technology and enabling solutions.

The creation of this new executive role signals Zimmer Biomet's commitment to enhancing its global presence and streamlining its operational structure. As part of this transition, Mark Bezjak, who was promoted to president of the Americas in September 2023, will remain in his position but will no longer serve as an executive officer.

According to a securities filing by Zimmer Biomet, Thornal will receive an annual base salary of $850,000, with a bonus opportunity in 2025 equal to 100% of his salary on a prorated basis, contingent on achieving performance goals. Additionally, he will be granted restricted stock units valued at $2.65 million and performance-based restricted stock units of equal value.

Prior to his brief tenure at Nevro, which ended with the company's acquisition by Globus Medical for approximately $250 million last month, Thornal held leadership positions at Hologic, where he served as group president of global diagnostic solutions. His career also includes a decade at Stryker, where he gained valuable experience in sales, marketing, and business development, culminating in his role as head of North American sales for the interventional spine business.
