Amwell Appoints Amazon Veteran as New Chief Product and Technology Officer

Amwell, a leading telehealth vendor, has announced the appointment of Dan Zamansky as its new Chief Product and Technology Officer. This strategic move comes as part of a series of leadership changes aimed at strengthening the company's position in the competitive virtual care market.

Leadership Transition and Industry Experience

Dan Zamansky, who assumed his new role on Monday, brings over a decade of experience from Amazon, where he held various leadership positions in product management, engineering, and technology. Notably, Zamansky founded and led Amazon Web Services Health AI, which provides artificial intelligence tools for healthcare and life science companies. His most recent position at Amazon was General Manager for platform core services, overseeing technology teams in the company's advertising business.

Zamansky succeeds Vaughn Paunovich, who previously held the title of Executive Vice President of Enterprise Platforms at Amwell. According to an Amwell spokesperson, Paunovich left the company for personal reasons.

Amwell's Strategic Realignment

The appointment of Zamansky is part of a broader restructuring effort at Amwell. Over the past year, the company has made several significant changes to its leadership team:

  • Mark Hirschhorn, formerly of TapestryHealth and Teladoc Health, was named Chief Financial Officer in October and subsequently expanded his role to include Chief Operating Officer at the beginning of the year.
  • Kathy Weiler, former Chief Commercial and Growth Officer, departed from Amwell at the end of 2024.
  • Roy Schoenberg, previously Co-CEO, stepped down last summer to serve as Executive Vice Chairman of Amwell's board of directors.

These leadership changes align with Amwell's goal to achieve positive cash flow by 2026, a target reiterated by executives during a recent fourth-quarter earnings call. The company has shown progress in this direction, narrowing its losses from $679.2 million in 2023 to $212.6 million in the most recent fiscal year.

Focus on Core Business and Financial Stability

As part of its strategy to streamline operations and focus on key growth drivers, Amwell divested its virtual psychiatric care business to Avel eCare in January. This move, coupled with the new leadership appointments, demonstrates the company's commitment to optimizing its product portfolio and improving financial performance in the evolving telehealth landscape.

With Zamansky at the helm of product and technology, Amwell aims to enhance its virtual care platform offerings to payers and health systems, leveraging his expertise in AI and healthcare technology to drive innovation and growth in the competitive telehealth market.
