Sutter Health Unveils Ambitious $1 Billion Expansion Plan for Northern California

Sutter Health, a major healthcare provider in Northern California, has announced a comprehensive $1 billion investment plan to significantly expand its services across the East Bay region. This ambitious project, centered around a new flagship campus in Emeryville, aims to address growing healthcare demands and improve access to care for local communities.

New Emeryville Campus: A Hub for Advanced Care

At the heart of Sutter Health's expansion strategy is the development of a state-of-the-art medical campus in Emeryville. The 12-acre site will feature a new medical center with up to 200 beds, designed to provide a wide range of critical healthcare services. The 335,000-square-foot facility will offer:

• Labor and delivery services
• Surgical capabilities
• Intensive care units
• Emergency care facilities
• Neonatal intensive care

The medical center, slated to open in 2032-33, is designed with future growth in mind, allowing for the potential addition of more patient rooms as needs evolve.

Complementing the hospital will be a regional ambulatory care complex, offering an array of specialty services along with imaging and laboratory capabilities. This outpatient facility is expected to welcome its first patients as early as 2028, signaling Sutter Health's commitment to expanding access to non-emergency medical care.

Strategic Service Expansion and Facility Upgrades

Sutter Health's investment strategy extends beyond the new Emeryville campus, encompassing a series of upgrades and expansions across its existing facilities:

• The Herrick campus in Berkeley will see growth in its behavioral health services, addressing a critical need in the community.
• The Alta Bates campus will continue to operate as an acute care facility until the new Emeryville medical center opens. It will then be repurposed to provide ambulatory surgery services, urgent care, and potentially skilled nursing care.
• A medical office building in Berkeley is undergoing renovation to serve as a primary care hub, also offering OB-GYN services.

• Recruiting 190 primary and specialty care clinicians for the new Emeryville campus
• Breaking down barriers to appointments and referrals
• Investing in programs to bolster the healthcare workforce
• Enhancing imaging capabilities and improving online appointment scheduling
• Collaborating with Sutter East Bay Medical Group and community physician partners to attract more healthcare professionals
