Novant Health Announces Leadership Restructuring to Accelerate Southeast Expansion

Novant Health, a nonprofit healthcare provider based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has unveiled a significant reorganization of its leadership team. The move is designed to facilitate the health system's ambitious expansion plans across the Southeast region.
Regional Reporting Structure Implemented
The cornerstone of Novant's restructuring is the implementation of a formalized regional reporting structure. Under this new framework, the health system will be divided into four distinct regions: Charlotte, Triad, Coastal, and South Carolina. Each region will be led by its own president, reporting directly to the executive leadership.
This regional approach is expected to streamline operations and decision-making processes, allowing Novant to respond more swiftly to local healthcare needs and market opportunities. The health system has indicated its intention to establish additional regions as it continues to grow, underlining its commitment to strategic expansion.
Integration of Business Incubator and Operating Units
As part of the reorganization, Novant Health is taking steps to further integrate Novant Health Enterprises, its business incubator launched in 2022, across the entire organization. This move is aimed at fostering innovation and accelerating the development and implementation of new healthcare solutions.
Additionally, the restructuring introduces acute and ambulatory operating units that will function across all regions. This cross-regional approach is expected to enhance coordination and standardization of care delivery throughout the Novant Health system.
Leadership Positions and Market Competition
While the reorganization establishes new regional presidencies, Novant has yet to announce appointments for the Triad region and the ambulatory unit. These key positions are likely to be filled in the coming months as the new structure takes shape.
The leadership reshuffle comes at a time when Novant Health is facing increasing competition in the Carolinas, particularly from Charlotte-based Advocate Health. Despite being smaller in scale—with 19 hospitals compared to Advocate's 69—Novant maintains a strong market presence, holding a nearly 50% market share in Winston-Salem and a 34% share in Charlotte.
CEO Carl Armato emphasized the strategic importance of the restructuring, stating, "We entered 2025 with significant momentum to accelerate our achievements and growth. These changes will accelerate our progress while remaining true to our commitment to delivering the highest quality care, remarkable patient experience and team member well-being."
