Providence Reshuffles Executive Team, Embraces AI in Healthcare Transformation

Providence, a prominent Washington-based health system, has announced a significant restructuring of its executive team under the leadership of newly appointed CEO Erik Wexler. The reorganization, set to take effect on February 1, 2025, introduces a new Office of Transformation and reflects a strategic pivot towards leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies across the organization.

New Office of Transformation to Spearhead AI Integration

At the heart of Providence's restructuring is the creation of the Office of Transformation, headed by Sara Vaezy, who transitions from her previous role as chief strategy and digital officer. This new office is tasked with identifying and implementing the most impactful AI and technology initiatives throughout the health system.

"It's time for us to acknowledge that much of the technology we use in health care has not removed the crushing demands on our medical staff and caregivers," Wexler stated in a recent LinkedIn post. "We will immediately leverage solutions that make the biggest difference for physicians and caregivers at Providence."

Vaezy, in her new capacity as chief transformation officer, will oversee the responsible adoption of AI and the development of next-generation tools, aiming to alleviate the technological burden on healthcare professionals.

Executive Reshuffling and Role Redefinitions

The restructuring extends beyond the creation of the new office, with several key executives seeing their roles altered or expanded:

  • Prub "PK" Khurana will transition from chief strategy officer for care delivery to chief strategy and growth officer, overseeing growth initiatives including Providence's global center in Hyderabad, India.
  • Susan Huang steps into the role of chief physician executive, overseeing physician clinics and research.
  • Ali Santore becomes chief communication and external affairs officer, managing advocacy, environmental stewardship, philanthropy, and health equity.
  • Dougal Hewitt's role is streamlined to chief mission officer, overseeing Providence's mission, ethics, and community benefits.

The health system is actively recruiting for a chief information officer, with Ivette de Rubens serving in an interim capacity.

Financial Pressures and Strategic Focus

Providence's executive reorganization comes as the health system continues to navigate financial challenges. Despite improvements since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization reported a $208 million operating loss in the third quarter of 2024. This loss was attributed to rising costs of drugs and supplies, as well as ongoing labor market constraints.

Wexler emphasized the need for "focus and discipline" moving forward, stating, "This is a lens the executive team and I will be highly dedicated to using to ensure Providence is a high-performing organization that achieves the best outcomes for our communities."

As Providence embarks on this transformative journey, the healthcare industry will be watching closely to see how the integration of AI and the new executive structure will impact the organization's performance and, potentially, set new standards for technological adoption in healthcare systems nationwide.
