Virginia Rizzo, board chair of Garnet Health, emphasized the potential benefits of the affiliation: "Our affiliation with Montefiore Health System will only help to strengthen that commitment by expanding access to high-quality, exceptional care close to home."

Financial Context and Motivations

The proposed affiliation comes against a backdrop of financial challenges for Garnet Health. In June, the organization announced a restructuring that affected 42 employees and led to a reduction in certain outpatient services. Jonathan Schiller, President and CEO of Garnet Health, cited "diminishing federal reimbursement and cuts impacting Garnet Health's current and projected financial sustainability" as factors driving these changes.

Further underscoring Garnet's financial difficulties, S&P Global lowered its rating on bonds issued for Garnet Health's hospitals in September 2024, giving a negative outlook based on multiple years of operating losses and a "very weak balance sheet."
